Salvation
Act 2:38-39
Then Peter said unto them,
Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and, ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
That verse is the very first sermon preached. Peter was telling the crowds what they must do to be saved. You see the crowds had just witnessed the outpouring of the Holy Ghost. They heard the believers speak in their native tongues. They were amazed at their behavior and, thought they were drunk. Peter explained that the believers weren't drunk. They were filled with God's Holy Spirit. Peter explains this outpouring was prophesied by the prophet Joel:
And it shall come to pass in the last days I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophecy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Acts 2:17
Going back to the first few verses in Acts chapter two you read that the sound of a rushing mighty wind filled all the house where they were sitting. Cloven tongues like as of fire sat on each of the believers. It was this event that signaled the Holy Ghost had indeed endued them with power just as Jesus had promised.
That promise is to all who believe. We all need the power of the Holy Ghost to live a holy life. Flesh could never get it right. God's will is for us to be born again and, filled with His Spirit.
Many teach that the day of Pentecost was just for that time. Yet, the entire new testament believers received the same plan of salvation. Paul received the same plan of salvation too. When we read the letters written to the churches we must understand these letters were written to believers that fully followed the doctrine of the Apostles.
Going back to the beginning of the birth of the church, is the way to truth.
